How to Make a New Garden Bed
This is the perfect time of year for the most instant gratification to make a new bed. The ground is nice and soft from the rain (be sure to wait until recent rains have absorbed before digging) and as soon as you have your new bed you can plant into it! The April rains will give you great chances of your seeds germinating and you won’t have to do much work at all.
FIrst way: Lasagna gardening is by far my favorite way to make a new bed because it is low impact on the gardener. Layering leaves, cardboard, and compost, letting it sit and then planting into it makes for a very rich soil with great texture.
Second way: More labor intensive but quick is to dig the earth into a bed yourself. The problem is what is growing there right now can be tricky to deal with. Mostly it can be weeded by hand in early spring quite quickly. This is what I just did to the side of my garden which had so much burdock in it, but 3 people working quickly make it go fast and it only took an hour or two.
These are the steps I did:
Lay out the hose so you get a nice curve and spray paint the curve.
Hand weed out everything growing that you don’t want in the bed. If it is sod then this takes a bit to turn it over and shake it loose from the soil.
Edge along your curve and rake the earth smooth.
